Weaving Nature and Tradition

Travel back in time and discover the vibrant colours of the Republic of Venice. Together, we’ll explore how Venetian artisans created beautiful natural dyes using plants, flowers, minerals, and other ingredients from nature. Through hands-on experiments, children will mix their own colours and use them to create colourful drawings and decorate paper or fabric, just like young apprentices in the workshops of the Serenissima.

What We’ll Do

  • We’ll discover the ancient art of weaving, a traditional craft practiced in many cultures to create useful objects from natural materials.
  • We’ll observe and handle a variety of flexible natural materials, such as slender branches, plant fibres, and weaving grasses, learning about their unique characteristics and traditional uses.
  • We’ll experiment with the basic weaving techniques, discovering how to bend, interlace, and secure natural materials to build strong and beautiful structures.
  • We’ll put our creativity and fine motor skills to the test by combining different shapes, textures, and materials to create our own woven designs.
  • Finally, we’ll craft a simple handmade woven object, applying the techniques we’ve learned and experiencing the beauty of working with natural fibres through traditional craftsmanship.
